Can you believe it….already Week Eight!
The 2009 college football season, for the fantasy crowd, is almost over. Most of your leagues are in the home stretch…fighting for playoff spots…upsetting the playoff apple-cart for your rivals….trying to keep out of the cellar….wondering why your star player early in the season has now turned into Buster McBust…
In dealing with college football QBs for Fantasy College Blitz, I have noticed that, at this time of the season, the QB position seems to produce fewer numbers….especially those at the BCS-level schools. Generally, the QBs at the BCS-level schools are playing their conference foes, and, their tougher ones as the season progresses.
Fortunately, some QBs are immune to the “end of season doldrums”. One of them, Houston QB Case Keenum (photo, thanks Scout.com), seems to put up better numbers playing against his conference foes.
Colt McCoy – Texas (vs Missouri): Last week I called it correctly…not to play McCoy vs Oklahoma. This week, McCoy does not face as good a defense, and, faces a Tiger team that is reeling after two losses.
Jeremiah Masoli – Oregon AND Jake Locker – Washington: Key Pac-1o game for both, especially Oregon, who are really in the driver’s seat for the Pac-10 title (USC visits later in the season). Locker and his Huskies have improved a lot since the disastrous 2008 season.
Case Keenum – Houston AND Bo Levi Mitchell – SMU: This will be the Fun Game of the Week….both QBs should put up a bunch of yards and scores. I would not play their defenses this week….believe me.
Jacory Harris – Miami (vs Clemson): Harris is becoming, more and more each week, one of the elite QBs in college football. His performance vs UCF last week may not have been outstanding…but, proved he can take a team on his back when the Canes ground game is sputtering.
Ricky Dobbs – Navy (vs Wake Forest): Navy’s option offense seems to be on overdrive now, and look for Dobbs to showcase when the Middies host a BCS-level foe this weekend.
OTHERS TO PLAY: Tim Tebow – Florida; G.J. Kinne – Tulsa; Kellen Moore – Boise State; Colin Kaepernick – Nevada; Diondre Borel – Utah State; Aaron Opelt – Toledo; Dwight Dasher – Middle Tennessee; Dan LeFevour – Central Michigan.
NOTE: At this time….not sure if Texas Tech will play Taylor Potts or Steven Sheffield this week vs Texas A&M. This may not be settled until game time.
UMMM…MAYBE HOLD OFF
Landry Jones – Oklahoma AND Todd Reesing – Kansas: With Jones…Oklahoma still has issues on offense…especially O-Line. With Reesing….OU has a great defense, and shut down Colt McCoy last week.
Max Hall – BYU (vs TCU): TCU has one of the best defenses in America, which will affect Hall’s production for this week. This is a big game for both teams, and defense will dictate the outcome.
DO NOT PLAY THEM
Blaine Gabbert – Missouri (vs Texas): After a great start, Gabbert has struggled a little vs Big XII foes Nebraska and Oklahoma State. Texas has a better overall defense than those two….and the frosh Gabbert may struggle to put up good numbers this week.
NOTABLES OFF THIS WEEK
Tyrod Taylor – Virginia Tech; Joe Cox – Georgia
Jarrett Brown – West Virginia: Brown may not start vs UConn this week
Tony Pike – Cincinnati: Although Pike is back at practice…this smells like a “game time decision” with the Bearcat QB vs Louisville this week…after he injured his non-throwing arm at South Florida last Thursday. Be careful with Pike.
