Head2Head Tips: Release the Big 12 Hounds

Oklahoma sophomore quarterback Sam Bradford Texas Tech junior QB Graham Harrell

Our Forum on Ning spawned a couple excellent writers/entertainers this season. Most of you know the effervescent “Neil Young” but you should also get to know Topher Dean.

Topher comes through again with some great analysis of the best values at Head2Head.com’s College Salary Cap Game. My favorite snippet:

So do you start Bradford or Harrell? Don’t choose. Start them both.

His top ten through week 11 of the H2H season-Ed.:

10) Josh Freeman, QB, Kansas State (12.9M, 70.74 efficiency rating)

Abandon ship! Abandon ship! If you’re still holding Freeman in your lineup, get out now! Manhattan is in complete disarray and even though Freeman may be auditioning for the NFL this Saturday against Iowa State, you owners should be thinking points, points, points, and Freeman is too much a risk this week. Against Nebraska, he was pulled in the third quarter because according to Ron Prince the junior quarterback just “wasn’t his normal self.”

9) Dez Bryant, WR, Oklahoma State (11.2M, 75.69 efficiency rating)

Colorado kept the wraps on Bryant for the most part holding him to 4 catches for 82 yards and one score. That only spells 18 points. Thankfully, almost everyone is on the Bryant bandwagon now so chances are your opponent if he’s still trying only picked up 18 as well. Bryant doesn’t play again until Bedlam two days after Thanksgiving. That means it’s time for you owners to make the switch back to Michael Crabtree.

8) Rob Gronkowksi, TE, Arizona (4.9M, 76.42 efficiency rating)

Welcome to the party, Gronk! With Chase Coffman being held out with a turf toe injury if owners did their homework then they could have come up with Gronk as his replacement (and $300,000 cheaper at that). So what did he do that allowed him to bypass honorable mention completely and steal Jordan Shipley’s spot? Twelve catches, 143 yards and two touchdowns which meant owners essentially stole 38 points. He’s still flying under the radar, so jump on him now (especially with Coffman on bye this week).

7) Kory Sheets, RB, Purdue (6.9M, 76.63 efficiency rating)

Hopefully you took my advice and switched Sheets out last week. If you didn’t you only garnered 10 points and that just won’t get it done from that position. His counterpart in that game, Shonn Greene would have been a far better choice. The good news is Sheets faces the Hoosiers this weekend which means he should rebound nicely-to the tune of 30+ points nicely.

6) Kenny Britt, WR, Rutgers (6.5M, 78.15 efficiency rating)

South Florida had absolutely no answer for Britt. I told you last week his staying power on the list would be tested and he passed with flying colors torching the Bulls secondary for 31 points. He’ll face a good pass defending Army team this week but that shouldn’t be any reason not to have his hot hand in your lineup. He is also a cheaper, more productive replacement for Jordan Shipley. Look for more big numbers.

5) Donald Brown, RB, Connecticut (10.0M, 81.83 efficiency rating)

Brown’s rating dropped a bit due to his 20 point outing against Syracuse but that should have been a lot more had the Huskies not pulled away in the third quarter. He’ll face the conference’s top rush defense in South Florida on Sunday (remember only weekday games don’t count). This won’t be the last time he plays a football game on Sunday and you can expect a four quarter battle against the Bulls which should mean decent numbers for H2H’s most valuable running back.

4) Colt McCoy, QB, Texas (17.2M, 83.36 efficiency rating)

McCoy remains steady at #4 with 35 point performance against Kansas. To be honest, I expected a lot more from him, but I also expected the Jayhawks to actually try and compete. Having your quarterback involved in a blowout is a recipe for disappointment on most occasions however McCoy still managed to stay close to his average. He’s off this week so don’t forget to pull him out of your lineups.

3) Graham Harrell, QB, Texas Tech (20.0M, 89.27 efficiency rating)

The bye couldn’t have come at a better time for Texas Tech as they’ll have ample time to prepare for the biggest game thus far in all of college football. Not only is the possibility of a national championship hanging in the balance, but the Heisman trophy winner will be decided here as well. Oklahoma can be thrown on and Harrell will do a lot of it. He’s a must start this week.

2) Sam Bradford, QB, Oklahoma (17.8M, 89.71 efficiency rating)

Harrell will be facing his only real competition for the Heisman in Bradford this week. I can’t recall a game in the regular season with so much on the line. Averaging nearly 40 points per game, how can you not have Bradford in your lineup in the biggest of games this week? So do you start Bradford or Harrell? Don’t choose. Start them both. There are enough bargain producers on this list to make that possible and you won’t be disappointed.

1) Chase Coffman, TE, Missouri (5.2M, 90.60 efficiency rating)

Coffman didn’t play for the second straight week with the turf toe injury. I can’t begin to tell you how aggravating it is having the best value in H2H riding the pine. Luckily, my perfect season has continued despite his non-contribution the past two weeks. Coffman is off this week but I don’t see how he doesn’t return for the Border War on the 29th. Beware though as that game is essentially meaningless with Mizzou having already locked up the North. Gronkowski may be the better option anyway.

Honorable Mention: Jordan Shipley, WR, Texas; Juice Williams, QB, Illinois; LeSean McCoy, RB, Pittsburgh; Michael Smith, RB, Arkansas; Cedric Peerman, RB, Virginia; Jacquizz Rodgers, RB, Oregon State; Michael Crabtree, WR, Texas Tech; Darrius Heyward-Bey, WR, Maryland; Shonn Green, RB, Iowa; Kendall Hunter, RB, Oklahoma State.
