Big 12 Roundup: Texas-Texas Tech style

Can Taylor Potts maintain his big fantasy output against the Longhorns? (Icon SMI)

Texas travels to Lubbock to face Texas Tech in our prime time game, and with the way the Longhorn offense is playing right now this one could be up for grabs.

In fact, Red Raider QB Taylor Potts is the only player in this game who I’m leaning towards having a good game, but there is one huge caveat to that: last season, when a Texas defense of similar talent and tactical caliber as this one held the Red Raiders to 3 first half points, Mike Leach made some genius adjustments to score 21 in the second half of a close loss.

Does new Coach Tuberville know the adjustments to make to an offense still based around the Air Raid if Texas gets into a defensive rhythm? This could be the first time since 2000 that both these teams fail to break 30 points in this game.

Iowa State and Kansas State square off in a game where Austen Arnaud and Daniel Thomas are likely to both have their way against fairly weak defenses. All of the running, however, may limit the total number of offensive plays.

Missouri is in for another easy win against San Diego State – but who will lead them in fantasy scoring? Nobody really stood out when they scored 50 last week, as the offense is still sorting itself out. I’d expect a more points from Blaine Gabbert, TJ Moe, and TE Michael Egnew as a third option. Feel free to roll the dice with RB Henry Josey although I’m not going to put a lot of backing into that statement.

Air Force may have posted a convincing win over BYU, but Oklahoma is always going to have a massive off/def line advantage against the service academies. Expect a comfortable win and a big day for QB Landry Jones.

Colorado should fare well at home against a Hawaii outfit that has lost their luster since June Jones left. If that’s the case, QB Tyler Hansen should produce in both phases of the game.

Jake Locker and Washington were exposed against BYU; expect them to be completely shut down by the Husker D. This will be Taylor Martinez’ biggest test thus far, but the defense should keep Washington’s points down enough for him not to get into the feeling of pressure situations. Expect him to lead the team’s fantasy totals once again.

As the MWC looks to have lost a step since 08/09, Baylor may be the biggest hurdle to 12-0 left on TCU’s mild schedule. It goes without say that Robert Griffin is the only player on this team worth considering, but I’m not sure that the offense he plays for can allow him to produce against a strong defense like the Frogs.

Texas A&M’s offense should have a field day against an overmatched FIU defense. Jerrod Johnson and Jeff Fuller are both sure-starts for your fantasy team.

Oklahoma State looks like a WAC prototype all offense, no defense team. That’s fine for us – be sure to start Kendall Hunter and probably Brandon Weeden this week.
